Techniques and Styles of Exhibition Jumping

Exhibition jumps can range from simple descents with colorful parachutes to complex displays involving multiple jumpers performing synchronized maneuvers. The style and complexity of the jump depend on the event and the message the organizers wish to convey.

  1. Formation Skydiving: One of the most popular forms of exhibition jumping, formation skydiving involves a group of parachutists who exit the aircraft together and form various patterns in freefall before deploying their parachutes. These formations can be simple, such as a basic star, or more complex, involving intricate sequences that require precise timing and coordination.

  1. Swooping: This technique showcases the parachutist’s ability to control their canopy at high speeds close to the ground. Swooping involves a rapid descent followed by a dramatic flare, where the parachutist levels out just above the ground, often skimming across the surface before landing. This style is particularly popular in exhibition jumps due to its dynamic and visually striking nature.

  1. Canopy Relative Work (CRW): CRW, also known as “canopy formations,” involves multiple parachutists deploying their parachutes immediately after exiting the aircraft and then flying their canopies in close proximity to each other. They often link up by grabbing onto each other’s parachutes to form shapes or stack formations. This discipline requires precise control and trust between team members, making it a captivating spectacle.

  1. Wingsuit Flying: In recent years, wingsuit flying has become a popular addition to exhibition jumps. Wearing a specially designed suit with fabric wings between the arms and legs, a wingsuit flyer can glide through the air at high speeds, covering significant distances before deploying their parachute. The sight of a wingsuit flyer carving through the sky adds an element of awe to any demonstration.

  1. Night Jumps and Pyrotechnics: Some exhibition jumps are performed at night, with jumpers equipped with lights or pyrotechnic devices. These jumps create a stunning visual effect, as the parachutists appear as streaks of light descending from the sky, often culminating in a spectacular burst of fireworks as they land.
  2. Flags & Banners: Exhibition jumps quite often involve flying a large flag or corporate brand banner to represent a country or a company.

Safety Protocols and Training

Given the high-risk nature of parachute demonstrations and exhibition jumping, safety is of paramount importance. Participants undergo rigorous training to hone their skills and ensure that every aspect of the jump is meticulously planned.

Pre-Jump Preparation:

Every exhibition jump begins with thorough preparation, including detailed briefings on weather conditions, landing zones, and emergency procedures. The jumpers and support team review the jump plan, including exit timing, altitude, and formation sequences. All equipment is inspected, with special attention given to the parachutes, altimeters, and communication devices.

Training and Experience:

Exhibition jumpers are typically seasoned skydivers with hundreds, if not thousands, of jumps under their belts. They undergo specialized training for exhibition jumping, focusing on precision, situational awareness, and the ability to adapt to changing conditions. Teams often conduct practice jumps to perfect their routines and ensure flawless execution during the actual demonstration.

The Significance of Parachute Demo and Exhibition Jumps

In addition to their promotional value, exhibition jumps often carry symbolic significance. They are frequently used in national celebrations, such as Independence Day in the United States, where jumpers may descend with flags or banners, adding a patriotic element to the event. These jumps can also be part of memorial services, paying tribute to fallen heroes or significant historical events.
